ABSTRACT

Abstract This study investigated microshear bond strength (µSBS) of two (2) dual-cured resin-luting agents (RelyX™ Ultimate and RelyX™ U200) when photoactivated through varying thicknesses of lithium disilicate, with or without thermal cycling. Discs of IPS e.max Press of 0.5, 1.5, and 2 mm in thickness were obtained. Elastomer molds (3.0 mm in thickness) with four cylinder-shaped orifices 1.0 mm in diameter, were placed onto the ceramic surfaces and filled with resin-luting agents. A Mylar strip, glass plate, and load of 250 grams were placed over the filled mold. The load was removed and the resin-luting agents were photoactivated through the ceramics using a single-peak LED (Radii Plus.) All samples were stored in distilled water at 37oC for 24 h. Half of the samples were subjected to thermal cycling (3,000 cycles; 5ºC and 55ºC). All samples were then submitted to µSBS test using a universal testing machine (Instron 4411) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were submitted to three-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α=0.05). The mean µSBS at 24 h was significantly higher than after thermal cycling (p<0.05). No statistical difference was found between resin-luting agents (p > 0.05). The mean µSBS for groups photoactivated through 0.5 mm ceramic were significantly higher than 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm (p < 0.05). In conclusion, increased ceramic thicknesses reduced the bond strength of tested resin-luting agents to lithium disilicate. No differences were found between resin-luting agents. Thermal cycling reduced the bond strength of both resin-luting agents.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of different firing protocols on the surface roughness and flexural strength of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (LD) after aging methods. Forty-two LD bars of 16 x 4 x 2 mm (IPS e-max CAD, Ivoclar) were randomly separated into two groups according to firing protocols: Single firing-Staining, glazing, and crystallization in a single step; Multiple firings-Crystallization+First staining+Firing+Second staining+Firing+Glazing+Firing. After protocols, initial surface roughness readings were taken (Surfcorder SE1700, Kosakalab). Samples were then randomly separated into three groups (n=7) according to the aging methods they were submitted: Thermomechanical cycling (TMC, ER System, Erios, 1,200,000 cycles, 0.3 MPa, 2 Hz and 5°C/37°C/55°C, 30 s swell time); Simulated toothbrushing (STB, Pepsodent, MAVTEC, 73,000 cycles), and Control (no aging). Final surface roughness readings were done, and samples were submitted to a three-point bending test (OM100, Odeme Dental Research) and fractographic analysis by scanning electron microscopy (EVO-MA10, ZEISS). Data were analyzed (2-way ANOVA, (α=.05). There was no difference (p>.05) in the flexural strength between the firing protocols, regardless of the aging method. STB decreased the flexural strength of samples submitted to multiple firings, different from control (p<.05). Without aging (Control), before TMC, and after STB, LD had lower surface roughness when submitted to multiple firings than to single firing (p<.05). The firing protocols did not affect the flexural strength or the surface roughness of the lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, even after aging. However, toothbrushing negatively affected the flexural strength and smoothed the surface of the ceramic submitted to multiple firings.

Multiple firings-Cristalização+Primeira camada do pigmento+Queima+Segunda camada do pigmento+Queima+Glazeamento+Queima.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Bicycles are a low cost and healthy means of transport, however accidents represent the negative downside. This study sought to describe the characteristics of cyclist deaths, their recent evolution, and the status of the cycle path structure in the city of São Paulo. It involved a descriptive study using information from the Mortality Information System (SIM-DATASUS) between 2000 and 2017. The relationship between the cyclist mortality rate and the cycling path network was evaluated using Pearson's correlation test. A comparison was made with bicycle journeys in the same period. The sociodemographic profile of deaths was compared with that of the general population. The mortality rate peaked at 7.91/million inhabitants in 2006 and decreased to 1.8/million in 2017; in this period, there was an increase in cycling journeys and in the cycle path structure. A negative correlation was observed between the mortality rate and the cycle path structure. The analysis of deaths indicates a predominantly male, white, young profile, with ≤7 years of schooling; 65% died in collisions with vehicles. There was a decrease in cyclist deaths in the city of São Paulo correlated with the increase in the bicycle path grid from 2008 onwards, in a scenario of increased demand for bicycle transport.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Chronic kidney disease, more prevalent in the elderly, is considered a public health issue worldwide. Objective: To evaluate the impact of automated, peritoneal dialysis modalities, intermittent and continuous, on the inflammatory profile of elderly people with chronic kidney disease. Methods: Prospective, cross-sectional and analytical study carried out in a dialysis clinic in Brasília - Brazil, with 74 elderly people aged 60 years or older. The patients underwent rapid Peritoneal Equilibration Test, clinical assessment, blood collection for biochemical and cytokine assessments, interleukin 6 and transforming growth factor beta 1, and answered a quality-of-life questionnaire (KDQOL-SF36). We used a 5% significance level for data analysis, associations and correlations. Results: Patients in the continuous modality had higher serum values of transforming growth factor beta 1 than those in the intermittent modality, which had higher peritoneal transforming growth factor beta 1, age and residual renal function than those in continuous mode. Interleukin 6 dosage in the peritoneum was associated with age, while serum IL-6 was associated with IL-6 in the peritoneum, time on dialysis and age. There was no association between the modality and the presence of diabetes, blood volume or nutritional status. Both modalities enable good adaptation to the dialysis treatment. Conclusion: Inflammation in automated peritoneal dialysis is mainly associated with low residual renal function, advanced age and longer time on therapy, and not to the type of dialysis performed.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the petroleum-based plastic pollution problem has been causing global attention. The idea of "degradation and up-cycling of plastics" was proposed for solving the environmental pollution caused by non-degradable plastics. Following this idea, plastics would be firstly degraded and then reconstructed. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) can be produced from the degraded plastic monomers as a choice to recycle among various plastics. PHA, a family of biopolyesters synthesized by many microbes, have attracted great interest in industrial, agricultural and medical sectors due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermoplasticity and carbon neutrality. Moreover, the regulations on PHA monomer compositions, processing technology, and modification methods may further improve the material properties, making PHA a promising alternative to traditional plastics. Furthermore, the application of the "next-generation industrial biotechnology (NGIB)" utilizing extremophiles for PHA production is expected to enhance the PHA market competitiveness, promoting this environmentally friendly bio-based material to partially replace petroleum-based products, and achieve sustainable development with carbon-neutrality. This review summarizes the basic material properties, plastic upcycling via PHA biosynthesis, processing and modification methods of PHA, and biosynthesis of novel PHA.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#The current study aimed to investigate the bonding properties of a novel low-shrinkage resin adhesive containing expanding monomer and epoxy resin monomer after thermal cycling aging treatment.@*METHODS@#Expanding monomer of 3,9-diethyl-3,9-dimethylol-1,5,7,11-tetraoxaspiro-[5,5] undecane (DDTU) as an anti-shrinkage additive and unsaturated epoxy monomer of diallyl bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DBDE) as a coupling agent were synthesized. A blend of DDTU and DBDE at a mass ratio of 1∶1, referred to as "UE", was added into the resin matrix at the mass fraction of 20% to prepare a novel low-shrinkage resin adhesive. Then, the methacrylate resin adhesive without UE was used as the blank control group, and a commercial resin adhesive system was selected as the commercial control group. Moreover, the resin-dentin bonding and micro-leakage testing specimens were prepared for the thermal cycling aging treatment. The bonding strength was tested, the fracture modes were calculated, the bonding fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the dye penetration was used to evaluate the tooth-restoration marginal interface micro-leakage. All the data were analyzed statistically.@*RESULTS@#After aging, the dentin bonding strength of the experimental group was (19.20±1.03) MPa without a significant decrease (P>0.05), that of the blank control group was (11.22±1.48) MPa with a significant decrease (P<0.05) and that of the commercial control group was (19.16±1.68) MPa without a significant decrease (P>0.05). The interface fracture was observed as the main fracture mode in each group after thermal cycling by SEM. The fractured bonding surfaces of the experimental group often occurred on the top of the hybrid layer, whereas those of the blank and commercial control groups mostly occurred on the bottom of the hybrid layer. Micro-leakage rating counts of specimens before and after thermal cycling were as follows: the experimental group was primarily 0 grade, thereby indicating that a relatively ideal marginal sealing effect could be achieved (P>0.05); meanwhile, the blank control group was primarily 1 grade, and the penetration depth of dye significantly increased after thermal cycling (P<0.05); the commercial control group was primarily 0 grade without statistical difference before and after thermal cycling (P>0.05), while a significant difference was observed between the commercial control group and experimental group after thermal cycling (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The novel low-shrinkage resin adhesive containing 20%UE exhibited excellent bonding properties even after thermal cycling aging treatment, thereby showing a promising prospect for dental application.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Bicycle paths are important infrastructures in the cities to promote active commuting. Thus, understanding the information inherent to their quality might help to understand their effects on human behavior. This study aimed at assessing the quality of the bike paths in the city of Florianopolisl by using the QualiCicle instrument. SOPARC tool was used to verify the use profile. A total of 38 cycling axes with a length of 54 km were selected. The qualitative analysis was classified as sufficient, with an overall average of 1.61 points. A total of 6,113 cyclists were observed; the majority was adult men who used to cycle in moderate intensity. Better-quality bike paths had a greater number of cyclists (50.5%). The logistic regression analyzes showed that young people are less likely to use cycle paths classified as 'good' ones (OR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.24-0.67). Considering per category, there is a greater chance of women to use bike paths with a 'good/excellent' infrastructure quality, and a 'sufficient' and 'good/excellent' signalization. It is concluded that Florianopolis has an adequate bikeway network; however, the infrastructure distribution and the cycle path connections are irregular along the city regions. A better quality of the cycling infrastructures can promote greater use by women and the elderly, groups that perform less physical activity.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Changes in our bodies can cause several problems, particularly for students who are concerned about maintaining an ideal body shape. Many of them try to diet, but their body returns to its previous weight or even increases in weight. Thus, this study aimed to determine the factors that influence the incidence of weight cycling in Indonesian students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study used purposive sampling to collect data. Three hundred college students from West Java province, Indonesia, participated. Weight cycling was the dependent variable and the independent variables were physical activity, sex, and weight management. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing the incidence of weight cycling. Results: Sex, physical activity, skipping meals, and snacking were determinants related to weight cycling incidence. Females had a 0.7 times higher risk of experiencing weight cycling than males. Inactive students were 4.7 times more likely to become weight cyclers, and those who rarely skipped mealtime had lower risk of being weight cyclers. Students who sometimes and always consumed snacks had higher risk of becoming weight cyclers by 3.3 and 2.7 times, respectively, compared to those who rarely consumed snacks. Conclusion: Regular physical activity, not skipping meals, especially breakfast, and practising a healthy diet every day are recommended strategies to avoid weight cycling during a pandemic.

Results: After 6 weeks of NT, Pmax GXT in the CG and DG groups decreased by 0.7% and 1.7%, respectively,as compared to the pre-training numbers. The difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). And after 6 weeks of SIT, Pmax GXT increased significantly (P<0.05) in both experimental groupss, with increases of 9.2% and 10.2% for the CG and DG groups, respectively. Conclusions: The results show that intermittent training can effectively improve the aerobic metabolism of short-haul cyclists. As the power bicycle load and the training intensity and volume of the deceleration intermittent training program increase, the more significant the changes in aerobic capacity that can result in adaptability. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment results.

ABSTRACT

Potato is a plant that has high nutrient demand during its cycle. Given the concern with the environment, due to the large amount of synthetic mineral fertilizer used in the crops, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of organomineral fertilizers in the cultivation of potato, cultivar Ágata, under cerrado conditions. The experimental design was in subdivided plots, consisted of four doses of organomineral fertilizer, corresponding to 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120% of the mineral fertilizer dose in the organomineral source (2800 kg ha-1 of formulated 3-32-6) and the subplots consisted of four collection seasons (61, 74, 89 and 110 days after planting) and four repetitions. Organomineral fertilizer with 40% of the recommended dose for potato cultivation provides higher yield of tubers in the Especial potato class and higher accumulation of total dry mass, in addition to providing satisfactory productivity for the tubers of higher commercial value. The use of organomineral fertilizers promotes the same behavior as mineral fertilizers, not interfering with potato development.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Passive leg cycling is considered as a tool in rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Objective: To review the scientific evidence on the clinical effects produced by interventions that use passive leg cycling in people with chronic thoracic spinal cord injury. Methodology: Narrative review. A search was performed by using the MEDLINE, CINAHL, LILACS, PEDro and Clinicalkey databases, for articles in English and Spanish, with terms such as "spinal cord injury", "thoracic injuries", "passive pedaling", "passive cycling" and "protocol", among others. Results: 14 papers were included in our research which described limited effects at the level of the cardiovascular, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems. We found clinical heterogeneity in the subjects, as well as differences in the cycling parameters used by authors. Conclusions: Studies of PP in people with chronic thoracic SCI mostly evaluated the effect of a single session. Cardiovascular changes were mostly studied; however, more evidence is needed.

ABSTRACT

Heart failure with high prevalence is the endpoint of many cardiovascular diseases. Once diagnosed, patients usually need lifelong medication, which seriously affects their quality of life. The drugs commonly used to treat heart failure include angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-blockers, aldosterone receptor antagonists, and diuretics. However, the long-term use of those drugs can lead to side effects such as hypotension, depletion of body fluid, and electrolyte imbalance and even increase mortality. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Qi deficiency and blood stagnation is the major cause of heart failure and when Qi is not moving, blood is not flowing. Therefore, the TCM clinical treatment of heart failure uses the Chinese medicinal materials which replenish Qi, activate blood, and dispell stasis to treat both internal cause and external symptoms. Recent studies have demonstrated that Chinese herbal medicines such as Astragali Radix, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, as well as the compound formulas such as Buyang Huanwutang, Simiao Yongantang, Qili Qiangxin capsules, and Qishen Yiqi drops, play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of heart failure via replenishing Qi, activating blood, and dispelling stasis. Inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, mitigation of myocardial fibrosis, improvement of calcium cycling, and protection of mitochondrial function represent the key mechanisms for the treatment of heart failure with Chinese medicinal materials. Focusing on the pathogenic mechanisms and signaling pathways of heart failure, this paper systematically describes the pharmacological effects, molecular mechanisms, and research progress in the clinical application of Chinese medicinal herbs with effects of replenishing Qi, activating blood, and dispelling stasis and their compound formulas in the prevention and treatment of heart failure, aiming to provide scientific evidence for the development and clinical use of anti-heart failure Chinese medicinal materials.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of an intelligent aerobic bicycle training on lower limb motor function, cardiopulmonary function and activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with ischemic stroke at different courses. MethodsFrom November, 2019 to November, 2021, 138 ischemic stroke patients were stratified-randomly divided into control group (n = 69) and experimental group (n = 69). All the patients received medication and routine rehabilitation training, and the experimental group additionally received intelligent aerobic bicycle training, for eight weeks. They were assessed with Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Lower Extremities (FMA-LE), peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), Six-minute Walk Test (6MWT) and modified Barthel Index (MBI) before, and four weeks and eight weeks after treatment. ResultsThe performances of FMA-LE, VO2peak, 6MWT and MBI improved in both groups after treatment (|t| > 6.763, P < 0.001), and improved more in the experimental group than in the control group (|t| > 2.439, P < 0.05). For the patients beginning training less than one month after stroke, the performances of FMA-LE, VO2peak and 6MWT improved more in the experimental group than in the control group (|t| > 2.036, P < 0.05); for those during one to three months, the performances of 6MWT and MBI improved more (|t| > 2.005, P < 0.05); for those during three to six months, the performances of all the tests were not significantly different (|t| < 1.303, P > 0.05). ConclusionIntelligent aerobic bicycle training may improve the lower limb motor function, cardiopulmonary function and ADL for patients with ischemic stroke, especially intervening earlier.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare effects of different amounts of carbohydrate (CHO) in beverage on plasma glucose (GLU) concentration during exercise after feeding breakfast. Seven healthy Japanese male subjects performed 30-min cycling at an intensity on the 75% of maximal load at 3-h after feeding breakfast under 3 types of CHO (0 g, 30 g and 150 g) beverage conditions. The subjects ingested 500 mL of beverage dissolved each amount of glucose at 30-min before the exercise. The GLU concentrations were measured at 35- and 10-min before the exercise and every 5-min during the exercise. The minimum GLU concentrations under the 30 g condition for all subjects were lower than a criterion for hypoglycemic (72 mg / dL). The mean value also fell below the criterion at from 10- to 20-min during exercise. The minimum GLU concentration under the 150 g condition of only one subject was lower than the criterion, but the mean value did not fall below the criterion. Significant negative correlations were found between the subjects’ maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the decreases in GLU concentration from maximum to minimum under both the 30 g (r = -0.947, p < 0.01) and 150 g conditions (r = -0.884, p < 0.01). This study clarified that feeding breakfast at 3-h before the exercise followed by the 30 g CHO beverage ingestion at 30 min before the exercise induced exercise-induced hypoglycemia, and that the subjects with higher VO2max had the greater decreases in GLU concentration.

ABSTRACT

Little is known regarding the effects of mineral-containing supplemention on oxidative stress markers, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in response to an acute bout of exercise in humans. The present study investigated whether prior mineral-containing supplemention can improve oxidative stress status and how this supplementation influences on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism after a single bout of cycling in young men. Twelve, healthy young men (aged 22.5 ± 2.4 years, mean ± SD) underwent two, 150-min trials in a random order. Each participant received oral administration of mineral supplement containing 13.4 mg of sulphur or placebo one minute before exercise. In both trials, participants cycled at 75% of heart rate reserve for 60 minutes and then rested for 90 minutes. Blood samples were collected pre-exercise supplementation, immediately after exercise, 30 minutes after exercise, 60 minutes after exercise and 90 minutes after exercise. Circulating concentrations of derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites, biological antioxidant potential, glucose and insulin did not differ between trials. Elevated circulating concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids were observed immediately after exercise in the supplementation trial compared with the placebo trial (mean ± SD: 1.1 ± 0.5 and 0.9 ± 0.3 mmol/L, respectively: trial × time interaction, p = 0.036). The present study showed that acute mineral-containing antioxidant supplemention appears to have no effect on improving oxidative stress markers in response to a single bout of cycling in healthy young men. In addition, the findings of this study suggested that mineral-containing supplemention may influence lipids metabolism during exercise.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of functional electrical stimulation (FES) rehabilitation cycling on lower limb motor function in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Methods From November, 2017 to December, 2020, 36 children with spastic hemiplegia in Beijing Bo'ai Hospital were randomly divided into control group (n = 18) and observation group (n = 18). The control group received routine rehabilitation training twice a day, and the observation group received FES rehabilitation cycling in addition, for eight weeks. Before and after treatment, the muscle tension of gastrocnemius and hamstring muscles on hemiplegic side was evaluated by modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), the change of walking speed was evaluated by 10-meter walking speed, the change of walking endurance was evaluated by 6-minute Walking Test, the walking function was evaluated by areas D and E of Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), and the energy consumption was evaluated by physiological cost index (PCI) . Results Two cases dropped out in the observation group. After training, there was no significant difference in MAS score of gastrocnemius muscle in both groups (t < 1.145, P > 0.05), the MAS score of hamstring muscle significantly decreased in the observation group (t = 4.869, P < 0.001), and no significant change was found in the control group (t = 1.458, P > 0.05). After training, the 10-meter walking speed, 6-minute walking distance, the score of GMFM and PCI significantly improved in both groups (|t| > 6.241, P < 0.001), and were better in the observation group than in the control group (|t| > 2.097, P < 0.05). Conclusion FES rehabilitation cycling training can improve the lower limb motor function of children with spastic hemiplegia.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) can cause reduced exercise capacity, deterioration in functional activities, and poor health-related quality of life. This study aims to objectively reveal lower extremity involvement in the peripheral predominant forms of juvenile idiopathic arthritis through qualitative evaluations and to determine the effects of these involvements on exercise, function, and quality of life. Methods: Thirty-two patients with a history of peripheral arthritis and aged between 7 and 16 years participated in the study. Demographics, JIA subtype, disease duration, arthritis and deformities of the lower extremity, disease activity score, 6-min walk test (6MWT), cycling exercise test (CYC-E), childhood health assessment questionnaire (CHAQ), and pediatric quality of life inventory (PedsQoL) scores were recorded. In case of clinical suspicion of arthritis, an ultrasonographic examination was performed for a definitive diagnosis. Regression analyses were performed to explore the most associated lower extremity involvement and patient characteristics for each of the dependent variables including 6MWT, CYC-E, CHAQ, and PedsQoL. Results: Of the total number of patients, with a mean age of 12.91 (SD 2.37) years, 28.1% had knee arthritis, 15.6% foot arthritis, 12.5% hip arthritis, and 37.5% lower extremity deformity. The parameters that were most associated with CHAQ and PedsQoL were hip and knee arthritis, whereas CYC-E was found to be most associated with knee arthritis and height, and 6MWT was found to be most associated with hip arthritis, knee arthritis, and demographic characteristics. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of hip and knee arthritis, which are among the determinants of walking endurance, function, and quality of life; and knee arthritis, which is among the determinants of cycling performance in JIA with lower extremity involvement.
